Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I ride with hubs over to work so I can drive back in the afternoon and we can hit the track. I have to inform you my naivety about the West Coast. You know you see those maps on-line about how East Coasters see the United States? That’s exactly how I viewed the US. I think I’ve shared before how I thought we could take a cute little weekend road trip to Seattle… from SAN DIEGO! You know, since everything is only 8 hours away from VA!
One of the things I was least prepared for was the landscape and wildlife of the West. We had raccoons, squirrels, and the rogue water-rat down by the river, but that was about all. Nobody really prepared me for the rogue mountain lions, wolves and coyotes. A mountain lion was spotted near the school here in town recently. NEAR PEOPLE! Not in the mountains away from civilization!
A few weeks ago we say a beast of a coyote on our way home from base, over on the Naval Weapons Station. No worries- there’s just ground squirrels and cows! Of course they’re wandering looking for food and what not. I was not prepared, I reiterate: NOT PREPARED to see a little coyote casually strolling across the street this morning. Not in isolation. Not over by the wooded areas around the hospital. It came right out of a housing community and across to a parking lot.
I’M SORRY WHAT?
I did not sign up for this! Great- the winter isn’t even here yet and I always thought they came down closer during the cold winters for food… does this meant we’ll be seeing more of them?
Last week hubs was given a tour of the base as part of his Indoctrination training and was told they have coyote hunting season because the population has been allowed to grow so big.
HIDE YA DOGS!
It was more frightening than the time we saw the big [after seeing this smaller coyote, what I am more and more sure was a] wolf here in town!
And to think this weekend we went and walked the track around dusk… I don’t think we’ll be doing that anymore!
Have you ever seen a “wild” animal?
